Insulating Your Home in the Summer Months – Why It’s a Good Idea

Have you noticed that no matter how much your air conditioner runs in the summertime, your home never seems to cool down adequately? Or if your home is a two-story, does the upstairs get almost unbearably hot, even with your AC running? If you’ve noticed that you’re spending a lot on your electric bills during the summer and you’re just not as cool as you’d like to be, it might be time to consider your insulation.

When we think of insulation, we tend to think of its importance in keeping our homes warm during the cold winter months. But a properly insulated home will also serve to keep you cool during the long, hot summer as well. Adequate insulation in your attic is the best way to improve your home’s efficiency in the summer months, because it helps keep the hot air that permeates your attic in the summer from pushing down into the rest of your home. (And if you’ve ever been in your attic in the summer, you know how hot it can get!)

How can you tell if your home might benefit from better insulation for the summer months? There are a few simple ways to check:

  • Can you feel heat radiating through cracks in the doorways and/or around windows?
  • Do you close some rooms in your house off because of the heat?
  • Is your air conditioner running constantly and is your utility bill high during the summer?
  • Are you and your family just not comfortable?

If you’re dealing with any of the above issues, it might be time to consider new insulation.

Choosing to insulate your home in the summer is a great decision, because not only will you immediately start seeing the benefits of it, but also you’ll be preparing your home for greater energy efficiency and enhanced comfort come winter. And, it will likely be easier for installers to get into your home and complete the installation as opposed to dealing with the snow, ice and wintry conditions they’ll probably encounter during the colder months.
